Tips on winter hiking and snowshoeing.
Now that winter is here, you might consider exploring the wilderness for some cold environment adventures. It is much easier to stay warm than to get warm.
Here are 7 tips on how to stay warm on a winter hike:
1) Layer and un-layer:
Adjust your temperature by adding or removing clothing layers such as hat, scarf, vest.
2) Cover your ears:
Protect your delicate ears from the cold wind by using a headband or a hat.
3) Wear gloves:
Avoid losing heat by wearing gloves to insulate your hands from the cold environment.
4) Keep moving:
Take brief breaks standing up if you can.
5) Carry warm drinks:
Sipping on a warm beverage will give some warmth to your body temperature.
6) Eat often:
Eat balanced food groups (fats, protein and carbohydrates) to fuel your body to help maintain body temperature homogeneity or constant.
7) Pace yourself:
Winter hiking or snowshoeing can take more out of you than any summer hiking. Set and pace yourself on a firm turn around time. If you feel tired, turn around and head back home.
Stay safe on your winter adventures!
